The service

With 3D models and renderings,
it has been illustrated how the service
would look like and work in real life.

Final Concept

The pandemic has underlined the role of plastics as an irreplaceable material to prevent the infection of healthcare workers, so the purpose of this project is to reduce not the use of single-use plastics, but the pollution caused by it.

With this problem in mind, the project aims to not only reduce the widespread environmental contamination generated by the mismanagement of single-use personal protective equipment but also help healthcare workers in their future jobs.

The idea of developing a machine that will extrude a 3D filament is born after investigating the enormous range of objects that could have been produce with a new material. This is why it doesn't focus on one objects but on the service itself.

Palette

The principal colour #FCC03D has been choosen based on the actual waste management colour system already existing in hospitals. PPE is recognized as hazardous infectious waste which may be treated to render safe prior to disposable or alternatively it can be incinerated.

Second and third colour, #DADAD3 and #ACACAC, respect the atmosphere inside the building. They will give an idea of clean, tidy and simple.

Bin

The bin has been designed following criterias to be able to fit in the hospital, other than colours also height, wipesbility and shape has been considered.

The combination of the pedal and the handle part, permits the user to not touch the bag bin and being in contact with the infected waste. In this way contamination has been avoided.

Machine

The machine combine four different steps necessary to create a 3D filament for a 3D printer.

Following the french method, before entering in the machine, face-masks will be put in quarantine for 4 days.

Then the machine will grind them in small pieces, decontaminat with UV lights for almost 30 seconds, mix with a binding material to extrude to create a simil plastic material into a filament for 3D printers.

3D printing is a transformative technology that is affecting key aspects of hospitals.

  • As a planning and simulation tool, if offers the promise of more precise surgery with fewer complications.

  • For training, 3D models can reduce the learning curve and increase opportunities for procedural practice.

  • The models can facilitate communication among multidisciplinary teams, thus potentially reducing medical errors.

  • They can increase engagement of patients and families, thereby enhancing shared decision making.

  • Finally, 3D models can lead to medical breakthroughs by enabling basic science, translational, and clinical investigations.
